In a move that promises to create a more level playing field, the UK government has pledged to grant girls with equal access to all school sports. The announcement comes after the successful campaign by the England women's football team, the Lionesses, urging for more opportunities for girls to play football in schools with initiatives like the #LetGirlsPlay Movement.

Growing up as a young girl, I never got to play football in PE lessons at school. It was only after school that I had the chance to pursue my passion for the beautiful game. And even then, it was a lonely pursuit with very few female role models to look up to. But as the government announces that girls will be granted equal access to all school sports, I can't help feeling bittersweet about the news.
On the one hand, I am thrilled that young girls today will have the opportunity to play the same sports as boys in lessons and extra-curricular clubs. They will have access to female role models who have broken down barriers and achieved great things in the world of sport. It's an honour to bear witness to this historic moment, knowing that young girls today won't have to struggle to find their place in the sporting world.
But on the other hand, it's hard not to feel a sense of sadness for the 11-year-old me who didn't get to practice the "Russo Back Heel Special" in the playground. It's difficult not to feel a sense of loss for all the girls who were denied the opportunity to pursue their passion for sport simply because of their gender.
Yet, despite feeing bittersweet the overwhelming feeling I have is pride, I am grateful for the change that is happening. It's a step in the right direction towards a more equal and inclusive society. And it's a reminder that progress is possible, even in the face of adversity.
The promise will see schools required to provide a minimum of two hours of Physical Education (PE) each week, and that girls and boys should be able to play the same sports in both lessons and extra-curricular clubs. This is a significant step towards breaking down gender barriers in sports and promoting inclusivity and diversity.
The Lionesses' success at the Euros 2022 last summer inspired a generation of young girls to take up football. Still, they face challenges in accessing sports facilities and opportunities to play at school. This campaign for equal access to school sports by the Lionesses not only shines a light on the issue but also brings about meaningful and important change.

England women's captain Leah Williamson hailed the new measures, saying that it is their responsibility as a team to "open doors for young girls to pursue their passion for football." The team's success on the field has undoubtedly helped to inspire more young girls to take up football, and this announcement paves the way for even more girls to get involved in sports.
The announcement follows accusations that the government was threatening the Lionesses' legacy by selling off school playing fields. The new measures will, therefore, go a long way in ensuring that young girls have access to sporting facilities and opportunities to pursue their passions. It is an important step towards ensuring that girls have equal access to sporting opportunities and can pursue their passions and talents regardless of their gender. It also sends a powerful message about the importance of female role models and the impact they can have on young people's lives.
The Lionesses have shown that success on the pitch can inspire a generation, and this announcement will ensure that girls across the country have the chance to follow in their footsteps.
So to all the young girls out there who are just starting out on their sporting journey, I say this: seize this opportunity with both hands. Take advantage of the opportunities that are now available to you and know that you have the power to break down barriers and achieve great things. You have the power to make history and to inspire future generations of young girls to follow in your footsteps.
And to the young girl inside of me who still feels the pain of missed opportunities, I say this: it's never too late to start. Take up that football or any other sport that you're passionate about and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. Because now, more than ever, we know that anything is possible if we set our minds to it.
